72 hole Club
On Sunday evening (24th) Matt, Kevin and I will be heading down to New Romney to join up with 20 other guys in preparation for the following day when we will be playing 72 holes at Littlestone Golf Club.
The 72 Hole Club was formed some 40 years ago by a group of members at Purley and has been played in April ever since and at Littlestone for the last 20 years.
The group is made up of single figure Club golfers and Professionals, this year we even have a guy flying in from America to play. The group always meet up in the Broadacre Hotel in New Romney, for dinner and a few drinks and reminisce about stories and scores from previous years. The evening normally finishes around midnight (or earlier, if Bryan O'Neill has won everyone's money playing darts and cards!)
The alarm goes off at 5:30am the next morning, with just enough time for a quick breakfast at the local café and then onto the 1st tee for a 6:30am start. 36 holes later we stop for a quick lunch and then back out for another 36. The hardest part is always walking off the 54th thinking to you only have 18 to go!
Some 14 hours since we started, we all sit down for dinner and prize giving, before heading off on the long painful drive home.
I nearly forgot to mention, that all players must walk and carry their clubs with no help from course guides or GPS Devices, playing from the Championship tees and score their cards in medal format. Can't wait, should be interesting!
Will report on our scores in next weeks newsletter.
St George v the Dragon
Huge congratulations to Keith Pagan and Steve Jolly, who captained their respective teams with fantastic enthusiasm, making it a very successful event.
Matt and I had the privilege of partnering the Captain's, Rice and Jolly, coming out on top 2 and 1, unlike the overall result, which the Dragons won convincingly.
On that note……All to play for next year St George, as the score currently stands at 2 to 1 in favour of The Dragons.
Assistants Need No Assistance
Matt and Kevin both played in 'The Assistants Better Ball Championship at Farnham GC '. Kevin carried on with his consistent form, returning a score of 2 under and finishing 4th, but was overshadowed by Matt, who shot a very impressive 7 under to win the event by 3 shots, this was Matt's lowest score as a professional. Well done guys, just as well it was an 'Assistants' event so I couldn't play!
