Johnson secures lifetime status
The first World Golf Championship of 2019 took place over the weekend and for those of you who haven't heard about WGC events before, these are arguably the biggest events outside of golf's four Majors.
Perhaps, then, it was no surprise to see two of golf's biggest names battle it out for top-spot over the four days, with Dustin Johnson and Rory McIlroy going blow-for-blow in Mexico as golf's other stars struggled to keep pace.
The final result was a five-shot victory for the big-hitting American, thanks to five birdies during a blemish-free back-nine on Sunday afternoon. For McIlroy, it was a story of what could have been as the Northern Irishman mixed countless birdies with nine bogeys and a double-bogey across the week.
This was Johnson’s 20th PGA Tour title and pushed him back up to number two in the World Rankings, within touching distance of Justin Rose at the summit. It was a week where DJ also joined illustrious company in becoming only the fifth man in the last 50 years to win 20 PGA Tour titles before turning the grand old age of 35. But can you name the other four? Here’s a clue: two of them were playing in the tournament at weekend.
However, aside from claiming his sixth WGC title and third in Mexico, it meant Johnson will earn lifetime status on Tour as soon as he completes his 15th season. Not a bad weekend for the American and proof that hard work certainly pays off.
P.s. The other four were of course Tiger Woods, Phil Mickelson, Johnny Miller, and Tom Watson.

Anyone else but Tiger?
Sometimes, when someone does something utterly brilliant you just have to bow down and say well done. Rewind to Friday afternoon in Mexico when Tiger Woods found himself in the fairway bunker down nine. He's 135 yards away, huge trees blocking his line to the green let alone the pin and simply no way he can find the green. Well, fast forward to 4mins 3secs in this video to see what happened next...

75 yards? Up-and-down for me... |
The majority of golfers know how far they hit their driver and irons with a full swing, but wedges require you to be a lot more accurate if you want to start shooting better scores. So, whilst it can be useful to know how far a full PW or LW goes, you'll benefit far more from dialling in your wedges so you can hit specific distances that you regularly find yourself with on the course. |
Give yourself options You'll notice that different swings with each wedge will result in yardages that overlap - see table above. This is important as it'll give you options when considering the conditions. For example, if you're facing a strong breeze, we'd suggest going up a club and utilising a shorter swing so the ball flies lower with less spin, helping it to penetrate through the wind. |
Dial in with Callaway We'd recommend having a wedge system of the same brand and model, so you remove any variables in feel and spin across wedges. One model that we love is Callaway’s Mack Daddy 4 wedge. Its new Groove-In-Groove technology provides brilliant control and spin no matter if you're playing from the rough or the fairway, whilst 21 loft-bounce combinations give us a fantastic array of options to pick from when finding you the perfect set-up to improve your wedge play. |
