About Us
Purley Downs Golf Club was established in 1894, and the course was designed by J.H. Taylor, one of the famous triumvirate of Taylor, Vardon and Braid. Over the years the course has been visited by many famous names, including major winners, Henry Cotton, Gary Player, Tony Jacklin and VJ Singh, and in 1933 Percy Alliss won The News of the World Professional Matchplay, played at Purley Downs.

The course, which begins with what Golf World magazine described as “perhaps the best opening par-3 in golf”, is set on free draining chalk based downland, which means it is rarely closed. In fact even in a winter as wet as 2013-14, play was possible every day. Thanks to recent investment the greens are fast and true, but the many subtle undulations and slopes provide a challenge to golfers of every level.

Scott Graham - PGA Head Professional
Born in Scotland, I moved down South at the age of 19 and have been based in the Surrey area for the past 20 years working at Selsdon Park, Farleigh Court and now at Purley Downs where I have been the Head Professional since June 2010.

My aim is to give the members a 1st class service in all aspect of golf from: coaching, retail and repairs and a pro shop where they are more than welcome just to pop in for a chat.

I still love playing the game and represent the club in Professi

Matt Rice - PGA Teaching Professional
Joined the team in 2012 and soon after passed his final PGA exams at the 1st attempt. Since then he has concentrated his time on playing and coaching, specializing on the short game.

His playing career has seen him win many Pro-Am events and also the Guildford Alliance order of Merit. 2015 saw Matt try to qualify for the European Tour and The Open only missing out narrowly on both occasions, I’m sure he will return in 2016.
